History of Maa Jwala Chanalag Temple

Maa Jwala, the manifestation of goddess Sati, whose main shrine is located in Kangra, Himachal Pradesh was established in village Chanahlag of Tehsil Pacchad, District Sirmaur, Himachal Pradesh when the first forefather of the Parmar-Bhandari Clan, Sidhu Pawar came to live here around 1750. Ma Jwala, the Kula Devi of Parmar’s, Bhandari’s, Miyan’s and others was worshipped in the open under a tree in the village until 1815, where after Bhandari Ram Singh build a temple in the hamlet as a solemn promise he made to the deity while fighting Gurkha invaders. However, the exodus by the residents of the village by the beginning of the next century turned the temple and the village in to ruins. In 2002, Bhandari’s-Parmar’s and other local people of the area formed a Society with the main focus of rebuilding the temple of Maa Jwala in the village.
